Economy
Many people who are living with chronic diseases feel that their finances are affected. It may be about extra expenses such as special aids or a physiotherapist that you would not otherwise need.
Insurance
According to chapter 11 § 1 of the Insurance Contracts Act, insurance companies may refuse to take out insurance if there are special reasons. In connection with the application for sickness and accident insurance, a health declaration is usually required. For example, height, weight, any illnesses, sick leave, and doctor’s visits are requested. The information is then the basis for the insurance company’s risk assessment. Sometimes you can be denied individual health and accident insurance after the risk assessment. This risk assessment must take place after an individual assessment and not on a standard basis. When the companies have received the application and made their risk assessment, the insurance is granted either with a full refusal, normal conditions, an increased premium and/or an exception clause. If the company declines to take out insurance, they must state the reasons for their decision. You have the opportunity to review the insurance company’s refusal decision in court.
If you have the opportunity to apply for group insurance through the union or your employer, it may be a good option. In order to obtain group insurance, no health certificate is normally required. But be aware that the insurance still never covers events that occur before the insurance came into effect. You can never receive compensation for illnesses and injuries or for the consequences of such illnesses and injuries that showed symptoms before the insurance was active.
Transportation service
If, due to a disability, you have great difficulty getting around or using public means of transport such as a bus, you can apply for a public transport service/national transport service. Travel service means that you can travel by taxi or special vehicle. The rules for transport services are different within different municipalities, for example with regard to fees and the number of trips. If you are going to travel a longer distance of a private nature beyond your municipal boundary, you can apply for a national transport service.
Apply for transport service/national transport service with your municipality.
Compensation
If you are on sick leave for longer or shorter periods, there are different types of sickness compensation. Read more under the section Sick leave.
If you are suspended from your job because of your HIV status, you may be entitled to a carrier allowance. Read more under the Working Life section.
Grants and scholarships
There are no special HIV grants. A tip might be to contact your parish or deacon, they may be able to help. In addition to the church, there are many funds in Sweden and abroad that you can apply for money from. There is support in finding them via www.stipendier.se
